Ordinary Readiness

Ordinary Readiness is a home emergency checklist for families — what to keep on hand to get through up to two weeks without power, water, or a trip to the store.

I put this list together because I kept evangelizing to my friends about the importance of emergency preparedness, and they reasonably kept asking what actionable things they could do. This should help you and your family have a better baseline of readiness in the event of an earthquake, utility outages, supply chain disruptions, the next pandemic, or whatever other natural or not-so-natural disaster you want to be prepared for. It is designed to optimize for “set it and forget it” behavior (for example, canned goods are cheaper than the food options below but it’s an additional annual ‘to do’).

Start at the top and stop anywhere

This is roughly in order of what I see as important. Don't get overwhelmed — just do the things that make sense for you and your family. Doing something is better than nothing.

We're all used to being able to instantly coordinate with our friends and family, but in almost any emergency cell towers will get overloaded. The simplest thing you can do is agree on a plan ahead of time for when you can't reach each other.

01
My wife and I have agreed who is responsible for picking up each kid, based on where we're each likely to be during the workday, and where we should then meet up.
02
Have your cell numbers and address on a card in your kids' backpacks so there's a physical record of how to get ahold of you.
03
Most cities and counties have emergency text alerts you can sign up for, and they will share critical information when cell networks are working.
04
Satellite texting when out of cell service is typically free and becoming more common. iPhone 14 and newer have it; Apple's support page shows how to turn it on. Pixel 9 and newer (except the 9a) have it built in; Google's setup page walks through it. On Samsung and most other Android phones it comes through your carrier instead; T-Mobile and Verizon each have a page explaining theirs.
05
Put a shut off wrench next to the gas valve, know where the tool is to close the water main, and know where your circuit breaker is.

The core

Two weeks of readiness

Two weeks sounds at first like overkill, but it is the baseline recommendation from the Red Cross, the CDC, and a growing number of state emergency agencies.

You do not need to buy this all at once. Think about what you would most need if utilities stopped, you couldn't go to a store, and you were stuck at home.

In addition to some potable water supplies, have one or two ways of purifying water (e.g., rainwater, tap water under 'boil water' notices). Purifiers store for years unused. Once one has been used, follow the storage instructions and never let it freeze.

Chlorine tabletsAquatabs 397 mg, 100 tabletsAquatabs are chlorine tablets that keep for years: one tablet treats four gallons in thirty minutes. Unscented bleach works too (eight drops per gallon), but it loses potency within a year.
Chlorine handles bacteria, viruses, and Giardia. Aquatabs are not tested against Cryptosporidium, a parasite found in streams, ponds and flooded wells that causes GI issues. For water that came from outdoors, boil it, run it through one of the gravity purifiers above, or use the Katadyn tablets below.

Canned goods work too if you rotate them every year. I've opted for freeze-dried foods because I don't want the hassle of needing to remember to rotate canned goods out every 6-12 months. With freeze-dried foods you can buy it, store it somewhere under 75°F, and forget about it for two decades. Every pick below lists its calorie total. Four people for two weeks is about 112,000 calories: three Augason Farms kits, or four or five ReadyWise buckets.

These are the items that have to be rotated, because they spoil or get outgrown. Easiest thing is just to over-order from Costco, Chewy, or wherever you buy them already, so you are never on your last container.

three or four phone charges each
A phone in airplane mode that you check a few times a day lasts two or three days, so budget five to seven charges per person over two weeks. A 20,000 mAh bank gives three or four full charges, so one per adult covers the first days. After that the car is the reserve: a car battery holds about forty phone charges, and ten minutes of idling puts a real charge into a phone.
